VOWTECH designs, installs and supports business networks across the UAE from its base in Abu Dhabi — structured cabling, switching, Wi-Fi, firewalls and server rooms — planned from the outset for everything that now depends on the network, including CCTV cameras, attendance terminals and VoIP phones.
An office network used to connect computers to a server and a printer. Today the same cabling and switches also carry CCTV cameras, biometric attendance terminals, door controllers, IP phones, meeting room screens and building systems. When a network is planned only around desk computers, these devices are added later wherever a spare port exists, and performance and security both suffer.
We start with network planning and design: how many devices of each kind, where they sit, how much power they draw from the switch and which of them should be kept apart from one another. That design drives the cabling routes, switch sizes, Wi-Fi layout and firewall rules. Our article on network infrastructure practices explains the reasoning in plain terms.
A network also needs looking after once it is built. VOWTECH provides network installation and troubleshooting for networks we installed and for those we inherited, and day-to-day faults are handled through our IT support across the UAE. We are based in Abu Dhabi and attend sites in Dubai and other emirates for surveys, installation and fault-finding.
Three kinds of device cause most of the surprises on business networks. Each needs to be allowed for at the design stage.
IP cameras send continuous video, so they place a steady load on switches and uplinks that ordinary office traffic does not. They also usually take their power from the switch port.
Biometric terminals and door controllers send little data but must always be reachable by their server. They are often mounted at entrances where no network point was ever planned.
Voice is sensitive to delay in a way that email and file transfers are not. A network that feels fast enough for browsing can still produce choppy or dropped calls if voice is not prioritised.
From the cable in the wall to the firewall at the edge, delivered as a full project or as individual pieces of work.
Copper and fibre structured cabling installed to a plan, terminated on patch panels, tested end to end and labelled at both ends so that any point can be traced years later.
Managed network switches sized for port count, PoE load and uplink speed, configured with VLANs to separate office, guest, voice and camera traffic.
Access point positions are chosen from a survey of the floor plan and building materials. Each wireless access point is centrally managed, with separate staff and guest networks.
The firewall and router connect the network to the internet and to other branches. We configure security policies, site-to-site VPN, remote access and failover between internet links where a second line exists.
A proper server room setup gives equipment a rack, tidy cable management, UPS power, cooling and controlled access, whether it is a dedicated room or a single wall cabinet.
Slow networks, dropped Wi-Fi, loops, failing ports and intermittent faults are traced methodically with testing tools and switch logs rather than by swapping parts until the problem disappears.
The same five stages apply to a new fit-out, an office move or the upgrade of a tired network.
We walk the premises, mark up floor plans and count every device that will need a connection.
Cabling routes, cabinet locations, switch sizes, Wi-Fi positions and VLAN layout are set out in a proposal.
Cable is pulled, terminated and tested; cabinets, switches and access points are mounted.
Switches, Wi-Fi and the firewall are configured, then connectivity and coverage are tested.
You receive diagrams, port schedules and test results, and the network moves into ongoing support.
A network is judged by how rarely anyone has to think about it. These habits are what make that possible.
Every outlet, patch panel port and cable is labelled to match the documentation, so faults are traced quickly.
Spare ports, spare cabinet space and spare cable capacity are planned in, as offices never get fewer devices.
Cabling, switching, Wi-Fi, firewall and the devices on top are handled by one provider, which avoids finger-pointing.
The installers are the same company that supports the network afterwards, with support available 24/7.
