RFID access control replaces metal keys with cards or fobs that carry a small radio chip. Held near a reader, the card is identified, the controller checks whether that person is allowed through that door at that time, and the lock releases or stays shut. The decision takes a moment, and it is recorded every time.
The practical advantages show up when something changes. A lost key means changing a lock; a lost card is simply deleted. A new starter gets the doors their role needs. A cleaner has access only in the evening. Where a card alone is not enough for sensitive rooms, readers can be combined with biometric devices so a fingerprint or face is required as well.
Door access and time attendance often use the same cards and sometimes the same hardware.
