Server, Desktop & Application Virtualization

Virtualization Solutions for Servers & Desktops

VOWTECH helps businesses run more on less hardware. We design virtualization hosts, install and configure the hypervisor, convert existing physical servers into virtual machines and support the environment afterwards — for server consolidation, virtual desktops and applications that need an isolated place to run.

// OVERVIEW

Several Servers, One Set of Hardware

Virtualization lets one physical machine run several independent servers at once. Each virtual machine has its own operating system and applications and behaves like a separate computer, but they share the processor, memory and storage of the host underneath. A layer of software called a hypervisor — VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V are the common examples — keeps them apart.

For a business with a handful of ageing servers, each doing one job and mostly sitting idle, this changes the economics of the server room. Fewer boxes to power, cool, maintain and replace, and a new server becomes something created in minutes instead of ordered and waited for. We size hosts from our server solutions range to carry the combined load with room to grow.

Consolidation also concentrates risk, so design matters. A single host with no fallback is a single point of failure. VOWTECH plans shared storage, a second host where the budget allows, and Veeam backup and disaster recovery from the start, and supports virtual environments in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and across the UAE.

// TYPES OF VIRTUALIZATION

Server, Desktop & Application

The same idea applied at three different levels. Most businesses start with servers and consider the others later.

Server Virtualization

Physical servers are consolidated as virtual machines on one or more hosts. This is where most companies begin, usually when several servers are due for replacement at the same time.

Fewer physical servers to maintain
Snapshots before risky changes
Move VMs between hosts
Simpler hardware replacement later

Desktop Virtualization

User desktops run centrally in the server room and are reached from a thin client, laptop or home PC. Data stays in the data room rather than on devices that travel.

Desktops managed from one place
Useful for remote and shift staff
Data does not leave the server room
Older PCs reused as access devices

Application Virtualization

An application is packaged or published so that it runs in its own isolated environment. Helpful for legacy software tied to an older operating system or that conflicts with other programs.

Legacy software kept running
No conflicts between applications
Central updates for all users
Access from different device types

Virtualization Services

Design, build, migrate and support — as one project or as individual pieces.

Workload Assessment

We measure what your current servers really use in processor, memory, disk and network terms, so the new hosts are sized on evidence and not on the old specification sheets.

Host & Cluster Design

Number of hosts, shared storage, network layout and failover behaviour are designed together, because a virtual platform is only as strong as its weakest shared component.

Hypervisor Installation

VMware or Hyper-V is installed and configured on the hosts, with virtual networking, storage connections, management tools and resource rules set up properly.

Physical-to-Virtual Migration

Existing servers are converted to virtual machines and tested before the original hardware is switched off, with a fallback available until you are satisfied.

High Availability

With two or more hosts and shared storage, virtual machines can restart automatically on a surviving host if one fails, and be moved for maintenance without stopping.

Platform Support & Upgrades

Hypervisor patches, version upgrades, capacity checks and the clearing of forgotten snapshots and unused machines that slowly consume storage.

// PROJECT STAGES

From Physical Servers to a Virtual Platform

Migration is done in stages so there is always a working system to fall back to.

Measure

Current server usage, dependencies and licences are recorded over a representative period.

Design

Hosts, storage, networking and backup are specified and the migration order is agreed.

Build

Host hardware is installed and the hypervisor, storage and networks are configured and tested.

Migrate

Servers are converted one group at a time, outside working hours, and checked by your users.

Hand Over

Backups are confirmed, documentation is delivered and the old hardware is retired.

// WHY VOWTECH

What Virtualization Changes in Practice

The gains are practical rather than dramatic: less hardware, quicker changes and easier recovery.

Less Hardware

Fewer physical servers means less power, cooling, rack space and fewer maintenance renewals.

Faster Changes

New servers and test environments are created from templates instead of waiting for equipment.

Easier Recovery

A whole virtual machine can be restored onto different hardware, which simplifies disaster recovery.

Supported Locally

VOWTECH, based in Abu Dhabi, looks after the hosts, the virtual machines and the backup together.

Virtualization Questions

No. A small business with two or three servers often benefits the most, because replacing them with one properly sized host, or a pair, reduces hardware and makes backup and recovery simpler. The design is scaled to the workload, so a small office does not need an enterprise-sized platform.
Both are mature and both do the core job well. The choice usually comes down to licensing you already hold, the features you need, the skills available and what your backup and management tools support. We look at those factors during the assessment and explain the reasoning behind the recommendation.
With a single host, its virtual machines stop until it is repaired or they are restored elsewhere from backup. With two or more hosts and shared storage, the machines can restart automatically on a surviving host. This is why we discuss availability and shared storage at the design stage.
In most cases, yes. A physical-to-virtual conversion copies the server, with its operating system, applications and data, into a virtual machine. Very old operating systems, hardware licence dongles and specialist interface cards need checking first, and we identify those during the assessment rather than on migration night.
