PTZ stands for pan, tilt and zoom. Motors inside the housing swing the camera left and right and up and down, while an optical zoom lens brings distant subjects closer without the loss of detail that digital enlargement causes. An operator can steer it live, or it can move on its own between saved positions and react to alarms and motion.
The strength of a PTZ is also its limit: it sees only where it is pointing. While it is zoomed in on a gate, it records nothing of the yard behind it. For that reason we design PTZ cameras to work with fixed cameras, not to replace them. Fixed units hold the constant overview, and the PTZ provides detail on demand.
